2024 Vigil accessibility and event information

Join us for a vigil at the historical marker in Denver to remember Preston John Porter Jr. a 15 yr old who was brutally lynched just outside Limon Colorado on November 16th 1900.

Featuring poetry by Jovan Mays
Speech by Rev. Dr. Lee Butler
and more.

We will start at 4pm in the CU Denver College of Architecture & Planning building located at 1250 14th St. for an educational program and discussion on the history of racial terror lynching in Colorado and the racial injustice that persists today. This will end at 4:50 for a refreshment/bathroom break. If weather permits we will head outside to gather around the marker which is just around the corner, at 5pm for a 30 minute candlelight vigil. Electric votive candles will be provided. Please bring warm jackets or blankets and a camping chair if you anticipate needing to sit.

Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Bathrooms are wheelchair accessible but they are not ADA compliant so you may need assistance. The outdoor marker is wheelchair accessible. We are currently in a COVID wave in Colorado. Masks will be provided and are encouraged but not required. If you are having any upper respiratory symptoms please stay home.

Street parking is limited. There is a $30 paid parking lot across the street at 1385 Larimer St. There is a bus stop right across the street from the marker. The two nearest light rail stops are located at Union Station and 16th st. / California Station both are approximately a 14 min walk (0.6 miles). See map below.

If you would you like to reserve a parking spot for $10 in the underground garage of the CU
